With huge help from Institutional Advancement, Central Receiving, and OIT, Dr. Hatley received a 200-server donation from Yahoo during the Fall 2016 semester. These servers are intended for student instruction, research, and development projects – faculty can use them as well! Students, or Research Scientists as Dr. Hatley calls them, will learn how to administer a Linux-based data center (Linux is an operating system supported by the free and open-source software community). This means they will get experience maintaining what we commonly called a ‘cloud,’ will learn how to configure and maintain web, database, and other types of servers; use agile software development techniques to design, develop, and deploy web and mobile apps, along with a host of other skills.
